Jake Parker's 5 Tips for Aspiring Artists

It's always great to find talented artists like illustrator Jake Parker who actually have a calling to teach and sincerely enjoy sharing their knowledge with others. Jake recently posted a video (see below) of his visit to Singapore, where he gave a lecture and a workshop. During a TV interview he was asked what tips he would give to an aspiring artist and he listed these five things you need to do in order to be successful:

1. Have a Full Creative Bank Account.  Always fill your mind with stories, great artwork, architecture, current events, etc. All this information and inspiration you withdraw from your creative bank will be very useful when creating artwork.

2. Master Your Craft. You have to get really good at what you're doing.  So, set your goals, learn the fundamentals, experiment with different techniques, and draw every day.

3. Take On Personal Projects. Don't just draw when you are asked to. Create projects yourself and assign projects to yourself. Because a lot of creativity and freedom comes from these projects that only you can create.

4. Collaborate With Others. Find a way to collaborate with those around you and make something bigger than a project you can make yourself.

5. Share With Others. Share your process, share what you've created with others.  Whether it's online or in person, like conventions and galleries, put yourself out there and pass on what you have learned.

How about you? What would be your next step to be a successful artist?

Imperator Furiosa and The Wives

I fucking loved 'Mad Max: Fury Road'!!! Max is not even the main character in this movie, that title goes to Imperator Furiosa. She's the woman of action. Also kicking ass, the five wives: Toast the Knowing, The Splendid Angharad, Capable, The Dag, and Cheedo the Fragile.  Thank you, George Miller, for making this incredible film!

One last thought: Whenever you're complaining about your age, just remember that a 70-year-old dude made 'Mad Max: Fury Road' and it was awesome.

Pepsi Is Asking For Free Creative Work

Beware of Pepsi's worldwide "Live For Now Design Challenge"!

This is what some companies do in order to avoid hiring professional graphic designers and save big bucks.

Pepsi will receive thousands of free creative ideas and will only choose the one they like. The winner will only receive a trip to New York and the "opportunity" to meet the Pepsi design team. Sure, provided that the selected creative waives all rights for the use of the design as well as royalties. Pepsi will deem the winning design as "work for hire" but they will not pay.

Always read the fine print and don't give away your work for free, guys!

Cheers!

¡Saludos!

How To Protect Your Artwork From Online Pirates

Let’s go straight to the point:  If you post your original visual creative work online, someone somewhere is going to download it and use it for their own benefit with or without your permission, and there’s nothing you can do about it.

That goes for drawings, designs, illustrations, photography, or even videos in some cases.

You can try posting a statement to declare the ownership and authorship of your work, but who’s gonna read that? Much less comply with the terms.

You can add a watermark over your work, but anyone with basic knowledge of Photoshop can remove it and, let’s face it, it just looks ugly.

You can stop posting and sharing your artwork online, but why? You have every right to promote your portfolio, and social media is all about sharing and communicating.

So, what can you do?

Stop posting hi-resolution images online!!!

Yeah, the bigger the image the more awesome it will look.  But you’ll just be giving your work away for free! If you allow a hi-res download of your creative work on deviantART or anywhere else, don’t complain when you find out that someone is using it for whatever or making a profit with your art. You practically invited them to do so.

Go low-res with your web images! I’m guessing 800px wide and 72dpi or smaller. Yeah, go smaller. The internet doesn’t need more than that to be fed.  Don’t help the online pirates get hi-res artwork for free to make marketable printed material.

Best of luck!

-IAMO

¡Buena suerte!
