Batman 75th Anniversary

Wow! My favorite comic book character of all time turns 75 years this month!!!

Batman, originally referred to as "the Bat-Man, was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger.  He first appeared in Detective Comics #27 back in 1939 and has been kicking ass ever since.

I made this fan art for Batman's 75th anniversary, trying to keep it simple, since my favorite versions of the character are very bold and not complex.

Here's my favorite Batman stuff:

Favorite Interpretation of the Batman: Batman: The Animated Series
Favorite Villian: Harley Quinn + Poison Ivy + Catwoman
Favorite Batman Movie: The Dark Knight
Favorite Version Of The Batmobile: The Tumbler
Favorite Bat Story: The Dark Knight Returns

Which are your favorites?

Scary Cute Ugly

I couldn't decide which kind of monster to draw, so I decided to draw different kinds of monsters sitting at a table having some coffee and cookies.

Originally, there were supposed to be four monsters, but I thought it would be an interesting idea to show only three monsters and have the spectator be the fourth one.

So, what do you think? If you were the fourth character, what kind of monster would you be and what drink would you be having?

Superman - 75th Anniversary

Back in 1938, writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster created Superman, a fictional character that helped create the superhero genre, and also, in essence, the modern comic book industry. For his 75th anniversary, I made this tribute to that first issue of Action Comics #1.

Q&A About Nerdmigos Webcomic

Nerdmigos by IAMO

Here’s a Q&A I did about my webcomic, “Nerdmigos”:

How did “Nerdmigos” come up?

IAMO: “Nerdmigos” started as an inside joke among friends and acquaintances when I made a comic to use it as an invitation to my birthday party.  The first comic is called “Nerdmigos: 33” because that was when I turned 33 years old.  The comic’s style and format were inspired by comic strips that I have always read in newspapers, like “Peanuts,” “Mutts,” and “Mafalda.”  My friends liked it and I decided to make more, every time including more characters.

Is it based on anything in particular (real life, a series, a novel, etc.)?

IAMO: “Nerdmigos” is an anthology of funny situations that certain people can identify with; people who debate about comics, movies, and pop culture on the internet or while drinking with their friends.  It’s not real life.  It all takes place in a mythical place called Nerdonia, where everything that nerds love can exist, from unicorns and zombies, to masked heroes and having a drink with Robert Downey Jr.

Are the characters based on you or people you know?

IAMO: Yeah, some characters are based on friends and people I know, including me.  But, “Nerdmigos” is not a biography.  I can say that I only took certain aspects of their personalities (including names and nicknames) to shape these characters that have always been fictional.

Have the concept/story/characters always been the same since the beginning or has it evolved, and why?

IAMO: Essentially, it’s the same.  The style and the type of stories I wanted to tell were basically established in the first twenty-five comics.  But, on the technical side, it has evolved.  What started as an inside joke among friends then turned into an exercise and a learning experience for me.  I have learned a lot with “Nerdmigos”.  I started with a black & white comic that I made with pencil and pen, and now, even though I still draw it with pencil, at the end it’s all digital and in color.  Eddie Vedder once said, if you want to paint, “a friend of mine said ‘paint a hundred and see if you're good at it, after a hundred, maybe you'll know’”.  So, this was my way of challenging myself and find out if I was any good at making comics or not.

What character/part/aspect of “Nerdmigos” do you like the most?

IAMO: I really like the freedom that the anthology format gives me.  On the one hand, there are no main characters; any character can take center stage and that way you have a bigger variety of stories.  On the other hand, it allows me to collaborate with guest writers.  The few times I have drawn stories from other writers have been very enjoyable experiences that have expanded the scope of the comic.

What plans do you have for this series or other projects?

IAMO: This series is a project that I could do all my life.  I can leave it for a while to concentrate on other projects or to learn new things, then, I can come back to the “Nerdmigos” universe and I keep having fun as always.  Just like the best of friends, when I see the Nerdmigos again, is like no time has passed.  I’m always welcome with open arms in Nerdonia.

If you have any questions about “Nerdmigos,” please write them in the comments section and I will gladly answer them.

Cheers!

Con “Nerdmigos” he aprendido mucho.

Zorras Del Mal 3

It's time for a new "Zorras Del Mal" pin-up just in time for Halloween! Composition-wise, it was obviously inspired by old tales from the crypt comic covers.  I took advantage of that because I really wanted to bring back Demona, Lucybella, and Jezebeth, the three characters from the original "Zorras Del Mal," and feature them in this one.  Now, about the word "zorras", just to be clear (because I've been asked about it before), its meant to be taken in the literal English-Spanish translation sense.  In English "zorra" means "Fox", as in Jimi Hendrix's song "Foxy Lady", as in "sexy."  But, when you translate it to Spanish, it means slut or worse.  Now, I don't care what it means in Spanish.  I'm taking it back! So, there you go.  A "Zorras del Mal" horror pin-up.  Hope you like it! Happy Halloween, everybody!

"Nerdmigos: What A Lovely Tea Party" Trivia!

Here’s some “Nerdmigos: What A Lovely Tea Party” trivia for you!

Did you know?

• Most “Nerdmigos” stories are told in 1-3 panels, some 4-6. This story by Edgar Allen Joe required 11 panels! A first for a “Nerdmigos” comic.

• The opening
semen & blood spatter scene was edited for deviantART.

• I based Insaneo’s grin on The Joker from “Batman: The Animated Series.”
• The legendary Mexican actor Tun Tun inspired the character design for the midget gang leader.

• The midget lowrider seen in the flashback panel was modeled after a classic 1960’s Cadillac.
• In panel 2, the midget character in the lowrider copilot seat kinda looks like Zach Galifianakis, but that was completely unintentional :p
• Insaneo is quoting ‘Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope’ when he says the midgets “are easily startled but they’ll soon be back and in greater numbers.”
• Isma’s laser sword was modeled after Luke/Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber and it’s appearance in this story is meant as a reference to “Nerdmigos: Lightsaber Fail,” where Isma’s collectible Darth Vader lightsaber was “accidentally” broken.
• Insaneo uses a somewhat modified Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun in this story.

Would you like to know more trivia about other “Nerdmigos” comics?

Some Thoughts on "Nerdmigos: What A Lovely Tea Party"

"What A Lovely Tea Party" is the latest installment of Nerdmigos webcomic!

It was written by Edgar Allen Joe.  This is the first time I have ever worked with a guest writer on "Nerdmigos" and it was a very fun process.

My original idea for "Nerdmigos" was to make it an anthology series where there are no main characters (any character can take center stage) and where I could collaborate with other artists or writers. The collaboration part of that idea never took off, so I have made the comics on my own. So, that's why I'm very happy about this collaboration. I hope it's the first of many!

So, about this installment's story, I just want to be clear on one thing: Having some characters exit "Nerdmigos" does not mean the end of the series. "Nerdmigos" is not about the adventures of a few characters. "Nerdmigos" is and has always been about friendship (from the best of friends to the shittiest of friends), mixed with silly geeky stuff. I make "Nerdmigos" comics every now and then because it's fun and because it has been an incredible learning experience for me. That’s the only reason why I’ll keep making them until I have no more stories to tell in the "Nerdmigos" universe.

I am really excited for what's to come, not only in "Nerdmigos" but in other projects.

Cheers and thank you for your support! I really appreciate it!

50 Years of Spider-Man, Hulk, Thor, Ant-Man, & Iron Man

Spider-Man Hulk Thor Ant-Man Iron Man 50th Anniversary fan art

Wow! 50 Years! Five of my all-time favorite MARVEL super heroes are turning 50 this year!

They were all very fun to draw.  I was thinking "Saturday Morning Cartoons."

I was told that the traditional sound of Iron Man's repulsors is "Shrak!!!"  I didn't know that, so, I used a traditional laser sound.

Well, you always learn something new.  And new skills, too.  Like I did while making this doodle.  This is one of my first attempts at drawing vector line art in Adobe Illustrator (although, as always, I traced the lines over my pencil sketch).  I used a combination of brushes and pen tool fills.  I was very happy with the result.  Then, I experimented with some coloring and shading techniques that I had never tried before in Adobe Photoshop.  Coloring Iron Man was particularly a challenge.

Let me know what you think of this doodle and help yourself to a free hi-res download at my deviantART page!

Cheers to the Birthday Boys!
